Holidays in Circeo: the Pontine islands

Also this year San Felice Circeo is confirmed as one of the favorite destinations for summer holidays for those who live in the central Italy. No wonder: in the area of Circeo, close to Rome and Naples, you have wonderful beaches, caves, woods and the islands. The Pontine islands are truly magnificent, easily reachable from the port of Circeo.

The archipelago of the Pontine islands, reachable from the port of Circeo in just an hour, is made up of Ponza, Palmarola, Zannone and Gavi to the northwest and Ventotene with Santo Stefano to the southeast. The largest island, from which the archipelago takes its name, is Ponza. Famous for its pristine sea, its rocky and sandy beaches, romantic coves and stacks, Ponza is the real jewel of the Tyrrhenian Sea, located a few kilometers from the Lazio coast.

In addition to the splendid nature, Ponza offers a lot of fun with its typical bars where tourists love to spend the evenings, the restaurants where to enjoy excellent local cuisine, the artisan shops.

The island of Ventotene, smaller, quieter and wilder than Ponza, has volcanic origins and represents the terminal part of a submerged volcano. Together with the island of Santo Stefano Ventotene forms a splendid nature reserve and a Marine Protected Natural Area. Ponza and Ventotene are the only Pontine islands inhabited even in winter.

The island of Zannone, on the contrary, is completely uninhabited. At one time the island was the seat of a Cistercian monastery of which ruins remain today. Zannone is the northernmost of the Pontine islands. Due to its naturalistic importance it has been included in the Circeo National Park.

As well as Zannone, the island of Palmarola is a nature reserve too. Considered one of the most beautiful islands in the world, Palmarola is famous for the spectacular nature and coast. The only ones on the island are the few characteristic houses carved into the rock, and a small restaurant located on the beach.

When booking a holiday in Villa l’Infinito you can easily integrate your stay with a boat trip and visit the beautiful Pontine islands. A day trip to the islands or a stay of a few days to visit all the hidden coves? On a sailing boat or a motor boat? Easy!
